Mike Hulme, known for his work on wind turbine noise, died peacefully at home in Devon on Good Friday 2021. He was 72. 

Mike was co‐founder of the DBJRG, Den Brook Valley Judicial Review Group which along with professional, scientific and legal expertise achieved the unprecedented attachment of amplitude modulation noise conditions on the Den Brook Valley wind farm planning consent. Events leading up to to this, including the court case against the wind farm developer, RES, are captured in the four-hour, BBC2 documentary series ‘Wind Farm Wars’.  

Mike was also a founding member of the INWG, Independent Noise Working Group whose principal aim is ensuring that the acoustic impacts from wind turbines are properly controlled in order to protect public health and well being.

Insightful, informed, determined and generous, Mike sought to hold his local planning authority to account and supported communities in their battles to redress the injustices imposed on them by government and the wind industry. Noise issues are exacerbated by the repeated failings of Local Planning Authorities to enforce the little protection afforded communities.  Mike sought acknowledgement by the government that current wind turbine noise regulations are failing to protect the public in order that people would no longer be forced into action through the courts as the only means of adequately abating wind turbine noise nuisance, something which a recent case has shown is both risky and potentially ruinously expensive.

Barbara, Mike’s widow has greatly appreciated the kindness of the many people who have contacted her offering their condolences.
